1. Lever: It is a simple machine which consists of rigid bar capable of turning about a fixed point called as fulcrum. Effort is applied on one side weight can be lifted at the other hand.
Principle of Lever: “If a lever is in equilibrium then the torque of effort on one side is equal to the torque of load on other side”
Mechanical Advantage of Lever:

Torque of effort = Torque of weight
=> Effort x Effort arm = Weight x Weight arm
=> P x Effort arm = W x Weight arm
=> W/P = Effort arm / Load arm
Since w/P = M.A
M.A of Lever = Effort arm / Load arm
- Mechanical advantage of the lever increases if the effort arm is increased.
- Effort arm is the perpendicular distance from the point of application of effort and the fulcrum.
- Load arm is the perpendicular distance from the point of application of Load and the fulcrum.
