Pakistan Railways, by transferring the passengers and goods from one to other place, has been playing very import ant role in the economic development of the country. Recently, the new trains have been introduced on different routes due to which not only more passengers and cargo is being transferred but the revenues of Pakistan Railways have also been enhanced. The Government of Pakistan, for curtaining the losses of department of railways, has taken many measures. A plan is under process to lay the rail track up to deep sea port Gawadar.
For the success of Gawadar Port, this railways tine would play decisive role because Pakistan would be linked with the Central Asian countries through Gawadar Port. Ticketing system has been computerized and Reservation System in the Pakistan Railways has also been changed. Black marketing of rail tickets have sufficiently been curtailed due to computerization of ticketing.
An amount of Rs. 8.09 was allocated for the development of railways in 2003-04 and during this period, the following development projects were completed:
a. 220 Km. rail track was replaced.
b. 228 Km. sleepers were upgraded and modernized.
c. 15 locomotives and 68 rail bogies were acquired from China.
d. A survey has been conducted for connecting Gawadar to Taftan, From Chaman to Gawadar and from Badin to coal mines of Thar.
e. As a result of addition of the new passenger coaches, traveling services have fairly been improved.
F. Eight new Rail Services have been initiated on 8 different routes.
g. 65 cargo carrying jumbo bogies have been acquired from China. Apart from it, 1300 large size goods bogies would also be added by 2006.
Pakistan Railways, with reference to passengers and cargo traffic, has made its performance better due to which its revenues have been increased. Between 1998-9 and 2002-03, the revenues have been increased by 56.6 per cent. Nevertheless, during July-March 2003-04, revenues of railways have been decreased by 4.2 per cent during the same period of last year. Income in cargo sector decreased due to the fact that the cement plants have been converted from furnace oil to coal. The consumption of furnace oil decreased in the energy sector. Moreover, furnace oil began to be transited by other means of transport also. The decrease in freight rate of carrying goods to Afghanistan also decreased the revenues of Pakistan Railways.
