WHICH OF THE HIGHWAYS ARE UNDER THE CONTROL AND CUSTODY OF NATIONAL HIGHWAY AUTHORITY IN PAKISTAN? EXPLAIN.

ANSWER:
Eighteen inter-provincial roads (highways) are directly the responsibility of National Highway Authority. The total length of the roads constructed under this administration of this authority is 8,885 Km. which are just 3.5 per cent of the total road mileage n Pakistan but they bear 95 per cent of the passenger and cargo carrying burden. National Highway Authority has been making efforts to connect Deep Sea Port Gawadar with the up lands areas via Khuzdar and Afghanistan via Chaman. National Highway Authority plans to convert all the highways from East to West and North to South in Pakistan into International standard.

Other important projects of National Highway Authority are given below:

1. KARACHI-LAHORE-PESHAWAR-TOOR KHAM HIGHWAY (N-5):
Under this project 1756 Km. long double track is being constructed and 80 Km. has been completed up to March 2003.

2. MAKRAN COASTAL HIGHWAY (N-1O):
The proposed length of this highway is 653 Km. and 246 Km. has been completed in the first phase. This project of Rs. 150 million is scheduled to be completed in 5 years period.

3. KAGHAN VALLEY ROAD (n-15)
The length of this highway is 175 Km which connects Mansehar with Naran. This project has been completed at the cost of As. 3.82 billion.

4. KARACHI-KHUZDAR-CHAMAN-QUETTA HIGHWAY (N-25):
This 818 Km. highway is being widen according to the International Standard. Out of the total length of this highway 143 Km. have been completed.

5. HASSAN ABDAL-GILGIT-KHUNJRAB ROAD (N45)
The length of this highway is 803 Km. A sum of Rs. 52 million has been spent on the construction of this road and repair of old bridges. This highway has been constructed with the assistance of China.

6. LAKEPASS-DALBANDIN-NAUKUNDI-TAFTAN HIGHWAY (N-40):
The length of this highway Is 610 Km. and not only Naukundi-Taftan Highway has been renewed but it has also been widen by 124 Km. An amount of Rs. 135 million has been spent on Dalbandin-Naukundi Highway.

7. QUETIA-MUSLIM BAGH-ZHOB-D.I.KHAN HIGHWAY (N-SO):
This highway is 78 Km. tong.

8. INDUS HIGHWAY:
The length of this highway is 1265 Km. and this project was completed in July 2003.

9. SUKKHAR-SIBBI-QUETTA HIGHWAY (N-65):
This highway is 385 km. long. In construction work of this highway, the repair of existing 5 bridges is also inclusive.
