Motive refers to action to satisfy a need. Need, want, aim, stimulus, goal, drive, and desire are also used to mean motive.
The mainspring of people action is a motive. It is a restlessness to get over the pack and satisfy a yen. It explains the ‘whys’ of behavior. Motive is an inner state that energizes, activates, or moves, and that directs behavior toward the accomplishment of goals. It makes us work to satisfy wants. Needs (deprivations) lead to drives (directions), and drives lead to goals (satisfaction).
Motives may be (1) primary, and (2) secondary. Primary motives are unlearned and physiologically based. Secondary motives are closely allied to the learning concepts.
