|4. Wheel and Axle: It is a very simple machine often used for lifting heavy loads such as pulling a bucket of water from a well.
Mechanical Advantage: Consider a wheel with a larger radius ‘r’ with a shaft so that they can rotate freely.
An effort ‘P’ is applied through a rope on a wheel to raise a load ‘W’ on an axle. If wheel and axle is rotated one completed rotation then the distance through which effort applies is 2πR and distance through which load moves is 2πr.
So for an ideal machine:
