Q4. ANALYZE THE INFLUENCES OF LAKES AND RIVERS IN HUMAN ACTIVITIES.
HOW DO THE RIVERS AND LAKES INFLUENCED HUMAN ACTIVITIES? EXPLAIN.
WHAT FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIP IS MAINTAINED BETWEEN WATER RESOURCES AND ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES? DISCUSS.
Since rivers, oceans and lakes are the source of providing one of the most important food item (fish/ and sea food), to the man, their influences of human life are very deep. Rivers, lakes and ocean are either helpful or deterrent for the means of transport and communication. Rivers and lakes are the source of water for irrigation, they provide hydal power and influence also climate. 3
Although ocean, as compared to rivers and lakes, is more important source of provision of fish and other sea foods nevertheless, rivers and lakes are also not less important in this behalf. Rivers and lakes, for providing fish, assumed more importance for the regions where the is no ocean. For instance, Russian river Donga and Dawn and the rivers of Bangladesh and North-East Asia are of paramount importance.
Rivers and lakes can be the impediment for the development of means of transport. Huge expenditure is required on construction of bridges on rivers and the roads along the banks of lakes. Apart from the huge expenses construction of bridges on some rivers is not possible. Apart from enormous expenses, the number of bridges which are needed can also not be constructed on some rivers. Boats and fairies are used on such rivers due to which not only more time but expenses are also increased. For instance, the number of bridges needed, can’t be constructed on rivers Ganges.
Rivers and lakes play more important role in connection with the means of transport and communication. For instance, the great lakes of North America, Black Sea, Baltic City, Kyang, Mississippi and the rivers flowing in Northern European plains are playing very important role in transporting the trade goods. One glaring example can be quoted to show the importance of rivers. River Nile irrigates the entire Egypt, River Indus and River Tigris are playing decisive role in agricultural sectors of the concerned countries. These great rivers, producing generating power, keep their countries lighting and industries running. Lakes are the great water reservoirs on which human and animal life depends.
As the ocean determines the climactic conditions of a region, although rivers and lakes do not influence the climate nevertheless, they are also not less important in this connection. In some countries, agriculture is possible due to the water reservoirs in the form of dams constructed on the rivers and the warm and moist effects. Grapes are produced on the large scale on the Southern bank of Michigan Lake because it provides warm environment during cold season. The grass is grown on the Southern slopes ot Himalaya because they are war but no vegetation is grown on the Northern slopes. Briefly, rivers and lakes influence human activities prominently.
