WHERE TOBACCO IS CULTIVATED IN PAKISTAN AND WHAT IS THE POSITION OF ITS PRODUCTIVITY? EXPLAIN.
Tobacco is ore of the important cash crops of Pakistan. Province Punjab and NWFP are significant provinces for the cultivation and production of tobacco. Baluchistan occupies third position while tobacco is cultivated in Sindh scateredly.
a. IMPORTANT TOBACCO GROWING REGIONS:
The important tobacco cultivating areas in Punjab are the districts of Ocara, Shikhu Pura, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Sahiwal, Vehari and Rajanpur. In NWFP, districts of Naushera, Bunair, Mala Kand, Mansahra, Sawabi, Mardan and Char Sadda are the important cotton growing areas. In Baluchistan, districts of Pishin and Qila Saifullah are included.
b SECONDARY TOBACCO GROWING REGIONS:
The secondary regions of cotton cultivation in Punajab are the districts of Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpuro, Dora Ghazl Khan, Muzaffar Garh, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Pak Pattan, Khanewal. Multan, Lahore, Kusur, Jhang and Attock. In NWFP, Dir, Sawat and Haripur district while only Dadu district is included in the secondary tobacco growing regions.
c. MINOR TOBACCO GROWING REGIONS:
Minor tobacco growing regions in Punjab are the districts of Layyah, Lodhran, Narowal, Bhakkar, Khushab and Jehlum. In Sindh, these areas are the districts of Shikarpur, Ghotki, Naushero Feroz and Khairpur whilo the districts of Zhob and Lora Lal in Baluchistan are the minor tobacco producing areas.
PRODUCTION, AREA AND PRODUCTIVITY OF TOBACCO:
The total area under tobacco cultivation in 2002-03 was 46.6 thousand hectares while this area increased to 46.8 thousand hectares in 2003-04. The production of cotton in
2002-03 was 88,000 tones while in 2003-04 the production of tobacco was reduced to 83.7 thousand tones.
