Q10. WRITE A COMPREHENSIVE NOTE ON THE CANAL SYSTEM OF IRRIGATION OF UPPER INDUS PLAIN.
WHICH CANALS HAVE BEEN GENERATED FROM THE TRIBUTARIES OF RIVER INDUS.
The upper Indus Plain Irrigation System depends on the canals generated from the tributaries of River Indus. These rivers flow in Punjab. For this irrigation system the canals have been generated from the rivers Ravi, Satluj, and Chanab. The detail of these canals is given as under:
a. CANALS FROM RIVER RAVI:
The following canals have been generated from the River Ravi:
1. LOWER BARI DOAB CANAL:
Lower Ban Doab Canal is generated from the Head work constructed on the River Ravi and it irrigates 12, 00,000 hectors of land of the districts Okara, Sahiwal and Multan.
2 SIDHNAI CANAL:
This canals has been generated from Sidhnai Barrage and irrigates 3, 00,000 hectors of land of districts Vehari and Multan.
3. UPPER BARI DOAB CANAL:
Upper Bari Doab Canals, flowing from the district of Gurdaspur of India, enters in Pakistan. Unfortunately, India has stopped it water therefore, it has been linked with the River Chanab by B.R.B Canal. This canal irrigates about 1200,000 hector land in Ban Doab. The dominant part of his canals is possessed by India.
b. CANALS FROM RIVER JEHLUM:
The following canals are generated from the River Jehlum:
1.UPPER JEHLUM CANAL:
This canal begins from the Head Work on Upper Jehlum and joins River Chanab and provides surplus water to Lower Chanab Canal. This Canal irrigates 1, 75,000 hector of land where wheat and cotton are gown.
2. LOWER JEHLUM CANAL:
This canal begins from Rasul Head Work and irrigates about 18, 00,000 hectors of land.
c. CANALS FROM RIVER SATLUJ:
The details of canals generated from River Satluj are given below:
1. BAHAWALPUR, DAYAMPUR AND PAK-PATTAN CANAL:
This canal generates from Islam Barrage and irrigates area of Melsi in the districts of Bahawalpur and Vehari.
2 DEEPALPUR CANAL:
This canal has been generated from Ganda Singh Wala head Work (located at Firozpur in India). This canal provides water to the area of Tehsil Deepalpur.
3. ABBASYA AND PUNCHNAD CANALS:
Both these canals have been generated from Punchnad Dam and provides irrigation water to the districts of Bahawal Nagar and Rahim Yar Khan. Both these canals have been generated from both the banks of River Satluj.
4. FORD WAH, SADIO AND PAK-PATFAN CANALS:
All these three canals are generated from Sulaimanki Head work and irrigate the districts of Multan, Bahawalpur and Sahiwal.
