Maize is also known as ‘Corn’ in America and its Botanical name is ‘Zeamayas and credit to introduce it as one of the cereal crops of the world goes to America.
The majority of the experts are of the opinion that maize was first cultivated in Mexico or Central America. Maize is related to one of the kind of grass Gramineae which was grown first in Tropical South America. The length of maize plant amongst all the cereals plants is highest (3ft. to 15 ft). The flowers of maize are both male and female.
Some of the tropical maize plants are more than 15 ft. Maize required the whole of the year from sowing to ripping. The plants of some of the varieties are not more than 3 ft. high and require, from sowing to reaping, 70 days only.
Maize is at number 3 amongst food crops. Maize, in Pakistan, is used not only for the human food but also for fodder for cattle. Maize is also used for making glucose, starch, alcohol, plaster, board and maize oil.
Although maize is the crop of Kharif but trend is growing fast in Pakistan to make it the crop of spring also. Maize is cultivated in spring in Punjab in the districts of Jhang, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Sahiwal and Pak Pattan. Maize is grown for the purpose of fodder for the cattle from February to October both in irrigated and rain fed areas of Pakistan. The irrigated areas of maize cultivation are Indus Basin and NWFP, Azad Kashmir and Northern areas in the upper ares.
